Apollo was born on 26th March 2001 a short chunky foal with an enormous head. Lorraine bought him as a weanling just to enjoy as a hack with no thoughts of showing him. As a yearling he was positively ugly but with the sweetest nature. Whilst playing with his mate in the field he ripped his shoulder on a stone wall and so began an horrendous few months. The gash healed well even though the stitches broke down but with laser treatment all was well.

Apollo - 2 days old Apollo then went lame on his off hind leg which was eventually diagnosed to be in his buttock. He had been playing again with his mate in the field who had reared on top of him and caused the trauma which was thought to be a haematoma. When tested with a syringe puss was extracted and he was admitted into our local vet hospital. Staggering pints of puss were removed under anaesthetic but after five weeks of washing out all seemed well again on his arrival home.

Two weeks later he started with a snotty nose and as strangles was in the area the vet took swabs. It was not strangles and was treated with antibiotics but to no avail. After several weeks with no improvement and a hacking cough he was again taken to hospital for a tracheotomy to determine what the virus was. He had to be treated with batril costing £400 for seven doses which should have done the trick but no, he had to have another seven doses which seemed to work.

Apollo - 3 years old After all the antibiotics his immune system was working overtime so a special drug was shipped in from America and £7000 later Apollo was finally cured.

As a three year old he was sent to Russell Wright for backing then spent the rest of the year turned away. At 4yrs he went back to Russell to be brought back into work and competed in Irish Draught classes that season. Apollo came out again in 2006 as a 5yr old onto the show circuit having a phenomenal season winning championships at North Yorkshire County, Derby County, 2nd at The Great Yorkshire Show and culminating at the breed show where he won the 4-6yr old ridden class.

Lorraine never thought in her wildest dreams that Apollo would have turned into the magnificent horse he is today. During the winter of 2006/2007 he has been competing in show jumping and dressage scoring well up in the seventies. In the spring of 2007 he will be competing in some one day events before commencing the showing season. Apollo will probably have a go at a few working hunter classes as well as the Irish Draught ridden classes all of which he enjoys and takes in his stride.

Apollo competed in his first novice ODE on Sunday 29th April 2007 coming 2nd out of 30 and qualifying for the UK amateur eventing championships in August.
